Patanjali apologizes the day after Supreme Court summons Ramdev in ads case.
This happened after the court criticized Patanjali Ayurved for not replying to a contempt notice regarding misleading advertisements.
In New Delhi, Acharya Balkrishna, the managing director of Patanjali Ayurved and an associate of Yoga guru Ramdev, apologized to the Supreme Court for the company’s misleading claims about its products and their medicinal effectiveness.
The affidavit was submitted yesterday, following the court’s criticism of Patanjali Ayurved for not addressing a contempt notice about misleading ads. Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah’s bench summoned Balkrishna and Ramdev to appear in court on April 2.
In an affidavit submitted to the court, Mr. Balkrishna expressed his utmost respect for the rule of law. Offering a sincere apology, he assured that the company would refrain from releasing such advertisements in the future.
Mr. Balkrishna clarified that Patanjali’s aim is to encourage people to lead healthier lives by using its products, which include remedies for lifestyle-related ailments based on ancient literature and supported by Ayurvedic research.
He also mentioned that the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, which bans advertisements of miraculous cure claims, is outdated. The affidavit stated that the last amendments to the law were made when there was insufficient scientific evidence in Ayurvedic research. However, Patanjali now possesses evidence-based scientific data supported by clinical research.
conducted in Ayurveda, which would demonstrate the advances made through scientific research in the context of diseases mentioned in the said schedule”.
“It is sincerely submitted that our sole aim is to enhance the health and wellness of every citizen and alleviate the strain on the country’s healthcare system. We achieve this by offering holistic, evidence-based solutions for lifestyle-related medical issues through the traditional practices of Ayurveda and Yoga,” it added.
Established in 2006 by Mr. Ramdev and Mr. Balkrishna, Patanjali Ayurved is a multinational conglomerate that produces a wide range of products, including Ayurvedic medicines, cosmetics, and food items.
The company has faced issues due to misleading advertisements about the effectiveness of their products.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court strongly reprimanded Patanjali for not responding to a contempt notice. The court ordered Ramdev and Balkrishna to appear before it. Additionally, the court highlighted that Patanjali Ayurved’s advertisements contradicted an assurance given to the court last year.
On November 21 last year, Patanjali’s lawyer assured the court that the company would not violate any laws, particularly regarding advertising or branding of its products. They also pledged not to make any casual statements claiming medicinal effectiveness or against any system of medicine in media releases.
The Supreme Court is considering a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which claims that Ramdev has launched a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern medicine.
