Reaction of Devendra Fadnavis and Aaditya Thackeray to EC ruling on ‘real NCP’
The Election Commission granted the NCP name and the ‘wall clock’ symbol to the faction led by Ajit Pawar.
Aaditya Thackeray, a leader of Shiv Sena (led by Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), has criticized the Election Commission of India’s ruling acknowledging Ajit Pawar’s faction as the legitimate Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), asserting that the electoral authority has been deemed deceitful.
“When the Election Commission begins to endorse theft, it signals the demise of democracy. The recent decision only confirms the compromised nature of the Election Commission (EC). It’s evident now that we’re no longer operating as a free and fair democracy,” Aaditya Thackeray expressed on X (previously Twitter), mentioning NCP founder Sharad Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule.
In Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s faction, and the Congress are coalition partners.
On Tuesday, the Election Commission (EC) officially recognized Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar-led faction as the authentic Nationalist Congress Party. Ajit Pawar humbly welcomed the decision by the ECI.
Commending Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis praised the Election Commission’s ruling. Describing it as anticipated, Fadnavis expressed certainty that Ajit Pawar, who is the nephew of Sharad Pawar, would secure the party’s name and symbol.
“…When we observe the rulings made by the Election Commission over the past 10-15 years in similar cases, these decisions are consistent. We were certain that Ajit Pawar would prevail. He commands the majority, and the organizational support is also behind him. Congratulations to Ajit Pawar… In 2019, the people’s mandate was violated and betrayed, but today’s verdict demonstrates the resilience of democracy,” Fadnavis stated to the press.
In a significant setback for NCP founder Sharad Pawar ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha elections, the ECI ruled in favor of the Ajit Pawar faction by granting them the NCP name and ‘wall clock’ symbol.
“The assessment of majority in the legislative wing has been pivotal in this case, where both factions were found to be operating outside the party’s constitution and organizational elections,” stated the poll panel.
Furthermore, the EC has offered the Sharad Pawar faction a one-time opportunity to select a name for their new political entity and submit three preferences. This option must be exercised by 3pm on February 7, according to the announcement.
