India’s Olympic moments: Gagan Narang shoots bronze
In the countdown to the 2016 Rio Olympics, we retrace some memorable Indian moments at the quadrennial games. Today, a look at Gagan Narang’s bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
From being a “puppy in a toy store” in Athens 2004, as he puts it during his interaction at the launch of the book ‘ My Olympic Journey’ , Gagan Narang’s life swung the entire arc when he brought India its first medal of the London Olympics after winning bronze in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event.
With a total score of 701.1, Narang was behind Alin George Moldoveanu of Romania with 702.1 and Niccolo Campriani of Italy who scored 701.5.
After Beijing Games gold medalist Abhinav Bindra fell by the wayside in the preliminaries, it was only fitting that Narang, the first Indian to qualify for the London Olympics, brought India its first medal of the event. For the medals to be awarded, the rule states that the scores of the qualifying and the final be clubbed. Narang took third place by 0.7 points from China’s Tao Wang. It was a closely-fought contest, with Narang dropping down to fourth position after shooting a 9.9 in his seventh shot. But incidentally, the overall points of the other shooters too fell at the same time and Narang managed to stay third. He was given a tough fight by Tao, whose worst shot of 9.2 gave the Indian the vital chance to pull away, and he did exactly that. Narang’s ten shots were as follows: 10.7, 9.7, 10.6, 10.7, 10.4, 10.6, 9.9, 9.5, 10.3 and 10.7. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Narang will be gunning for a medal across three different events – 10m Air Rifle, 50m Rifle Prone and 50m Rifle 3 positions – for the third consecutive time in the Olympics. “Balancing three events will be a big task. The challenge is to peak in all three events during a particular period. I am planning my training in a way that I peak in all three events,” Narang said.
