Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship row: SC dismisses plea for CBI probe
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a PIL seeking CBI probe against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on his citizenship controversy.
A bench headed by Chief Justice said that the petition filed by an advocate was frivolous and does not merit a hearing.
The bench said that the petitioner has made baseless allegation against Rahul Gandhi without verifying the facts.
The court refused to allow the petitioner to withdraw his plea.
The SC bench said that it is for the Election Commission to look into the issue if Gandhi has violated Election law.
Recently, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had alleged that the Congress vice-President has claimed himself to be a British national before the authorities in connection with incorporation of a firm.
“I have obtained documents which show that Rahul Gandhi had claimed himself to be a British national before the company law authorities there for setting up a company,” Swamy had said.
“The onus to prove he is innocent is on Rahul Gandhi,” Swamy said in reply to a query.
Rahul Gandhi has rejected the allegations against him and has dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order an inquiry against him and jail him if he is proved guilty. He accused Modi of using his ‘chamchas’ (cronies) to throw mud at him like the RSS and BJP did against his parents and grandmother Indira Gandhi.
