Microsoft to power art teacher’s rhino project
Guwahati: Microsoft will soon enter the state’s classrooms to spread awareness about one-horned rhinos among teachers and students.
The global IT giant has selected “My Horn My Life”, a project prepared by Kendriya Vidyalaya art teacher Anutosh Deb, among 30 projects from the country for the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE) programme-2015.
Deb, who works with the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, has been selected as a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert for 2015 for using technology to help students succeed in a ‘mobile-first, cloud-first world’, said a statement issued by Microsoft.
“It is my dream to run classes for teachers in the northeast so that they can create awareness among students to save rhinos. I am looking at innovative ways to equip students with the tools to succeed. Microsoft will provide the software tools which will be required to run the awareness classes,” said Deb.
He is working to get selected as one of the effective teachers from the country, following which he will be able to present his project at the Microsoft Education Global Forum, 2015, to be held in Redmond, USA, between April 28 and May 1.
The MIEE programme aims at encouraging teachers to use information and communications technology (ICT) tools to create projects for global classroom transactions.
“Killing rhinos is inhumane. There is no evidence that rhino horn has any medicinal effect. Still, they are being killed frequently due to lack of knowledge,” Deb said.
Assam has the highest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros in the country. These face tremendous threat from poachers as the horns are believed to have medicinal properties.
Rhino horns are in high demand in markets in South East Asia and China, forest officials said.
