Goa police file FIR against Tarun Tejpal for ‘rape’ of colleague
PANAJI: The threat of arrest loomed on Friday over Tarun Tejpal, the founder of Tehelka who has stepped aside as editor for six months following charges of sexually assaulting a woman colleague in a hotel elevator in Goa. Tejpal had also apologized for a “lapse of judgment”.
The crime branch of Goa police filed an FIR against Tejpal for the alleged assault earlier this month at a starred hotel in Bambolim, 5km from Panaji, where Tehelka had organized its ThinkFest event. The FIR came on a directive to Goa police by the National Women’s Commission, New Delhi. Tejpal was charged under IPC sections 354, 376 and 376 (2) (k) for sexual harassment and rape.
“The police team will leave for Delhi tomorrow (Saturday),” DIG O P Mishra told TOI. A three-member team headed by deputy SP (crime branch) Sammy Tavares had been formed to probe the case.
Speaking to TOI, Tejpal said it was a “consensual encounter that lasted less than a minute” in the lift. He said he was “totally surprised” at the complaint.
Goa police chief Kishan Kumar said the FIR had been filed against Tejpal based on the material the police have obtained so far. Cops had on Thursday asked the hotel for CCTV footage from the lift and the hotel lobby.
All through Friday, Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury was questioned on TV and by reporters who had gathered at the magazine’s office about her defence of Tejpal. She said the magazine had now instituted a committee to probe the allegations against Tejpal.
