Corporate houses behind Jaitley’s phone tapping, suspects Delhi police
The investigation into illegal access to mobile phone call details of BJP leader Arun Jaitley has opened a Pandora’s box. Police has confirmed not only Jaitley but call records of several other politicians and businessmen were accessed.
The call details of other politicians and businessmen that were accessed along with Jaitley are corporate honcho Vivek Nagpal, his arch rival Nitin Shah, former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel, BJP leader Sudhanshu Mittal and former commissioner of IPL Lalit Modi. Incidentally, Jaitley has long-standing feud with Mittal, who was considered very close to deceased BJP stalwart Pramod Mahajan.
Delhi police suspect private corporate houses have played a key role in this illegal tapping because this special service was taken against a considerable sum of amount which can only come from a corporate house. Police is scrutinising the role of a few top executives of two corporate houses whose dirty tricks departments are always active in gathering information about their rivals. The significant point is the cropping up of the names of two big businessmen, Vivek Nagpal and Nitin Shah, one-time friends turned bitter foes over allotment of profitable security number plate contracts in different states.
Nagpal’s name has featured in the defaulters’ list of almost all banks and he has been investigated a number of times by the DRI and the CBI for violation of customs rules as well as insider trading and default in payment of loans. Nitin Shah was arrested and was in jail for his alleged proximity with TADA accused . Both these businessmen have mostly cleaned up their controversial pasts with the help of powerful friends. Nagpal controls the number plate business of the Delhi government.
Delhi police has submitted a detailed report to ministry of home affairs regarding this case. The Centre on Friday rejected the allegation of phone-tapping and promised to get the full details of the ‘unauthorised’ obtaining of call details of the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha. Shinde said, ‘This was not a case of telephone tapping. The Indian government is not tapping any member’s phone.’
Though observers feel that Delhi police investigation will not go very far because of the involvement of powerful corporate houses, Delhi police claims otherwise. ‘We will solve this case and arrest the real faces behind the four arrested culprits,’ a senior police official, investigating the matter, said.
